Colonialism rule pushed Indians into purchasing secondgrade versions of their original designs. Much later, a handful of surviving artisans managed to establish local networks of trade and rekindle interest in the art of block printing. Today, the technique thrives partly because of its simplicity and partly due to it's high regard as the heritage craft that was almost lost.
