HANDOOM RUGS
Traditionally made handloom rugs that are made in India for Namaste on a fair trade basis The pattern and raw materials are provided to the weavers and payment is made on collection. Namasteâ€™s Indian agents visit and audit the production facilities to ensure that working conditions are acceptable and that fair trade guidelines as set by the WFTO are in place. Rug production is a skilled art which is passed down from generation to generation and the work attracts good rates of pay. These particular rugs are largely made by female weavers in traditional pit looms. This is carried out either in their own homes or in local production units. The income is a useful supplement to agricultural income. The business provides valued employment to almost 400 people in total.
