Hippy Chicks - HAND PAINTED CONTEMPORARY CRAFTS
Namaste's supplier of these hand painted iron and stainless steel crafts was founded before the concept of Fair Trade existed in Moradabad, India. They are a member of the WFTO and the Fair Trade Forum India. They provide regular employment to 300 people, run evening schools for more than 150 children in remote villages and help artisans to build and establish their own workshops. Most of the artisans are women, who benefit from the fact that they can work from home and maintain their family responsibilities. Our supplier provides benefits such as education and medical treatment for artisans and their families. As artisan businesses become more self-sufficient, our supplier takes on new families. Since the company's inception, about 20 artisan workshops have become independent. The business was started 10 years before Namaste, in 1986 in one room of a family house in Moradabad. The founder's idea was to promote these artisans and their crafts and he invested the earnings into infrastructure and equipment for underprivileged artisans, into training and into marketing their products. We are proud to be part of such an inspirational project.
